National spoken word artist and Tony Award winning poet Georgia Me has been named as the opening act for Grammy Award winning vocalist Jill Scott. Georgia Me, who performed alongside a lineup that was hosted by Scott in May, will travel with her and band mates in a 23 city tour across the United States. They will be performing in Chattanooga on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the Tivoli Theatre at 8 p.m.
Georgia Me who is known for spoken word throughout the city of Atlanta began her career as a teenager when she was first introduced to the work of Nikki Giovanni when she was given a research project on the poet and activist.
“Nikki Giovanni was the one person I wanted to be like,” said Georgia Me. “Her poetry makes you think and I’ve always said that if I ever had the opportunity to impact crowds as she did, I’d also want my words and poetry to make others think.”
Georgia Me is also the creator and executive producer of the cultural celebration, “The Tamika Festival” which is a week-long of events that takes place in the city of Atlanta to celebrate the culture and art of the spoken word genre. In addition, the city of Atlanta has given the spoken word artist an official day known as, “Tamika Day” in which she owns the keys to the city she grew up in.
