Everywhere Matt Mason goes in the world, the story is the same.
Young people love poetry. They just hate the stuff they’re taught in school.
Mason, an award-winning slam poet and executive director of the Nebraska Writers Collective, has heard it from the students he works with in Omaha.
He heard it in Belarus in 2008, Nepal in 2010 and Botswana in 2014.
Mason figures he’ll hear more of the same when he touches down in Romania this week, and he’ll share the same message kids everywhere seem ready to embrace: “Make poetry your own, and trust yourself you can do it.”
