20 years ago today I wrote a poem that forever changed my life. It was called “Struck By Love.” I was already in love with performing monologues and speeches on stage and I had written some dope notes for the ladies in high school but it wasn’t until I wrote this piece that I discovered this gift that GOD had graced me with. Over the years my poetry has opened doors, knocked down doors, brought change, experience, insight, love for self and others, introduced me to so many amazing folks, and has taken me to places far and wide. There have been so many times that I’ve stood on a stage in a land foreign to me and have been amazed by the fact that it was my poetry that had brought me there. From performances to recordings to tapings to speaking with the youth to penning pieces like “I Need To Write,” “Wings,” “Never Let Me Down,” and “Dear Father,” which has now evolved into a book, this gift has brought myself and others so much life, so much light. I LOVE what I do and I’m SO thankful for that moment that took place October 16, 1994. GOD, I’m so grateful that you chose to bless me with this GIFT! People, you don’t know when your purpose will reveal itself. Pay attention, stand proud in who you are, and move without fear… Poetry, I don’t know what I would have done without you. Thank You!! I TRULY have been STRUCK by LOVE!! #poet #poetry #lifelesson #lifemission #healing #passion #anniversary #ItsACelebration (Photo taken at the Southampton 9th Annual African-American Film Festival By Thomas Kochie)
