‘Speak Ya Peace’ holds Juneteenth celebration at Cameron Art Museum (via WECT)

Wilmington, NC

As Juneteenth events kick off around the community, neighbors and artists came together at the ‘Speak Ya Peace’ Juneteenth Celebration on Sunday, June 16.

The Juneteenth Committee of Wilmington Inc. and Speak Ya Peace hosted the celebration complete with poetry readings, spoken word, and music.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Mahlaynee Cooper, co-founder of Speak Ya Peace, says it’s all about recognizing what the country has gone through and what neighbors still struggle with today.
