ND cousins embrace new challenge, publish book of poetry (via KFYR)

You might think poetry isn’t for you, but then you’ve never read this book of poetry. Two North Dakota cousins spent the past three years writing and illustrating this book of poems, “Time to Soar: Word Dances and Bird Songs for Every Season.”

Inspired by her own life challenges, Katie Bruckbauer started writing, and that brought her closer to her cousin, Mary Jo Savageau.

Together they created something they say is relatable to everyone, poetry fans or not.

Bruckbauer’s life has always revolved around dance. She thought her days of performing were over.

“I haven’t performed on stage in a long time,” she admitted.

That is until now. And the dances she’s performing now are a little extra special because they’re based on poems she wrote.

“Embrace” is one of nearly 50 in her new book, “Time to Soar: Word Dances and Bird Songs for Every Season.”

Bruckbauer did the writing; her cousin did the illustrating. The book is a first for both women.

“It was a lot of trial and error,” said Savageau.

Together they learned to embrace the process, and the end result is something they’re both pretty proud of.
