Petoskey, Michigan.
After a successful four-week poetry intensive workshop in April, Sarah Snider of Poetess and Stranger in downtown Petoskey is expanding her offerings to reach even more people.
“I truly believe that isolation and loneliness will tear a community apart as easily as anything else,” said Snider, who is a published poet herself. “Strong communities are built by finding ways to honor what moves us and share it. Poetry is what moves me, and so I am honoring it by creating a community space where those who are also moved to be vulnerable and open through poetry can do so with me. This is poetic togetherness, join us.”
The Alive Poets Society meets every Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at Poetess and Stranger. Participants read, discuss and write poetry together in an informal setting. The group welcomes ages 17 and older. Donations are welcome.
Poetry Out Loud is a poetry reading night occurring every third Monday of the month, from 7-9 p.m. at Poetess and Stranger. There is a $5 cover or a haiku about money. The money goes towards chairs, sound system and advertising.
The group’s next event is on Aug. 21. Participants are invited to bring original poetry or prose to read, with a maximum of three minutes per turn. No materials are censored, so listeners should be aware and writers judicious with what they share. Trigger warnings are appreciated, and no hate speech is allowed.
Poetess and Stranger is located at 445 E. Mitchell St., Unit A in downtown Petoskey.
