The waxing lyrical from Manawatu poet Professor Bryan Walpert has seen him become one of only two New Zealanders to be selected for the long list of the prestigious Montreal International Poetry Prize.
Walpert is a lecturer in the School of Media Studies at the Palmerston North campus and joins fellow Massey University creative writing PhD candidate and teacher Johanna Emeney to be in the running for the $21,500 prizemoney.
Walpert’s poem Smoke and Emeney’s There will be no horses here made the long list of 70 poems from the 2000 entered worldwide. Walpert has made the long list in all three competitions of the biennial event and in 2013 he also made the short list of 50 for his poem Aubade.
This year’s Montreal Prize judge is Irish poet Eavan Boland, one of Emeney’s favourite poets.
