Local poets tell stories in different ways (via Shreveport Times)

Even folks I know who read dozens of books a year seldom read poetry. Myself included.

Some find it overly difficult to understand. Others equate all poetry to sentiments found in greeting cards.

When I was a newspaper editor, few things could evoke a newsroom groan like a poem submitted for publication. Because, of course, newspapers didn’t publish poetry.

Why don’t we pay more attention to poems?

Throughout my school years, I studied poetry and enjoyed stories told with fewer words, was moved by emotions expressed with such eloquence. I even memorized the occasional poem and asked for a book of poetry for Christmas when I was in college.

But as the years passed, poetry was pushed aside for other reading.
