Full Title: Faith Matters: Poetry helps discover what God has hidden in the world

The St. Peter’s University audience of 250 students and guests knew exactly what Kathleen Norris, poet and author, was describing. Shutterfly allows parents to create a photo album of a child and share it with family and friends. That’s just what Norris received from her niece in Westfield, New Jersey.

Looking at the photos of her grand-niece wandering through an apple orchard gave rise to the first draft of a poem, “Maria in the Orchards.” But she thought it was dull so she needed “to sit with it for a while,” she said. “I need to water it with blood, sweat and tears.” Looking at the photos many times, she noticed how Maria was beginning to explore on her own and was becoming separate from her parents even at two-years old. Months later, Norris rewrote it as, “The Orchard.”
