Local history and poetry connect Wednesday (via Opelousas Daily World)

History and poetry will meet and combine during Wednesday’s Festival of Words program in Grand Coteau.

The program, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Grand Coteau Ballroom, will feature spoken-word artist Clemonce Heard and Allen Charles and his sisters, who will share stories of growing up in the Grand Coteau area during the 1930s and beyond.

The two-hour program is free and the public is invited.

Festival of Words Director Patrice Melnick said Heard, who lives in Baton Rouge, is a poet and typographer who co-founded the Brainy Acts Poetry Society, a spoken word poets’ group at Northwestern Start University in Natchitoches.

He will share his poetry with the audience and Melnick said visitors are welcome to bring and share their own poetry or stories during the open mic section of the evening.
