The town has decided to go ahead with appointing a poet laureate.
Over the next few months, a committee made up of members of the fine arts commission, library board and town council will meet to determine the duties of the poet laureate and interview candidates.
Mike Lepore, former town councilman and treasurer of the Connecticut Poetry Society, asked the council to create the position last month.
“It puts our community at a disadvantage,” Lepore said Tuesday about the lack of a laureate. “There has been a resurgence of poetry activity. I know it’s a subculture, but believe me, to us, it’s pretty involved … A town of our stature should have a poet laureate and see the art form flourish. I don’t want Glastonbury to lag behind in any fine arts movement.”
Over the past year, seven towns across the state have named poet laureates. There are poet laureates in South Windsor, Manchester, Guilford, Simsbury, West Hartford and Washington.
