Stanza after stanza of rich poetry flowed out of the memories and hearts of Covenant Harvest Academy students during the school’s third Poetry Out Loud competition Wednesday.
The event is part of students’ studies in English teacher Joy Noga’s class, and helps them to dive deep into complex, emotion-filled poems and to learn more about themselves in the process.
“Poetry can be like a slap in the face,” Noga said. It’s got that powerful sting of emotion.”
She said it also provides students a tool through which to process life.
“It reflects some of their limited experience and is a way to explore … but also to experience this whole other depth,” she said.
A total of 15 students selected and memorized two intricate poems each, of which one had to be at least 25 lines and one had to be from before the 19th Century (students could meet both criteria with one poem).
