Like a master painter creates life in a canvas with paint strokes, a slam poet uses words to provoke thought on deeper societal issues, make others laugh or cry or produce feelings of sadness, indignation, reflectiveness or euphoria in audiences.
During the upcoming 11th annual Individual World Poetry Slam poets from across the country will try connect with their audiences through their performance and words.
Put on by Poetry Slam Inc., the national slam for individual poets showcases some of the most innovative, practiced spoken word poets from North America over four days, from Oct. 8 to 11, in venues throughout downtown Phoenix and Tempe.
During the contest, 72 qualifying poets go against each other in bouts during the first three days, and the top 12 poets advance to the final round at Marquee Theatre on Oct. 11.
