Joseph Woods’ love of the spoken word has led him to a new name, a hip-hop music career, becoming Knoxville’s Poetry Slam Master, and most recently starting up a monthly open-mic poetry event known as Po’ Boys and Poets.
Black Atticus, as he is known among friends and the poetry community, walks into Big Fatty’s on Kingston Pike where the monthly poetry event takes place, and immediately his charisma and magnetic personality take over the room.
It is that personality that led Big Fatty’s owner Lisa Smith to invite Atticus to start up community poetry slams.
“I loved the idea of doing something different from live music, so I called Atticus to bring a slam poetry event here,” says Smith.
“Lisa knew about a few events that I had done. I fell in love with the Big Fatty’s space immediately, so I said ‘Yeah, let’s give this a shot,’ ” says Atticus.
As it turns out Atticus dined on a po’ boy sandwich that day at Big Fatty’s and hence the name “Po’ Boys and Poets” was born. The first event was held in the fall and has accumulated a steady stream of poets, newcomers and curious onlookers.
