Poetic Life Hasn’t Always Been Easy (via LivingstonDaily)

Poetry might have saved Brian Moilanen’s life. The 1989 Brighton High School graduate has battled alcoholism and struggled with mental illness, but today he is a published author working on his third book of poetry.

“Poetry has helped me advance in this world, not necessarily financially, but to help maybe save the soul,” Moilanen said of his work, which he noted is mostly spiritual and positive in nature.

While he said he doesn’t really write poems about himself, one of his favorites is titled “Chasing Shadows.”

“It’s kind of an eccentric view or understanding of what everyone has to go through to some degree in this world to understand who they are,” he said.

Moilanen has gone through a lot in his 43 years.
